Post subject: Hamster Playground Over LAN
Archived from groups: hamster>en>config (more info?)

I have installed Hamster Playground on my local server. I can use it with
XanaNews locally (i.e. on the server) with no problems but I get a Socket
Error # 10061 connection refused if I use it over my LAN.

I have the following entries in IPAccess.hst:

# Local computer
ALL, RW, 127.0.0.1

# Local network
ALL, RW, 192.168.1.0, 192.168.1.255

I have re-started the Hamster service after changing the file.

The server is 192.168.1.4 and the computer I am connecting from is
192.168.1.10.

If I try to change Configuration:Hamster Settings:Local Servers:Bindings
to include 192.168.1.10 then the Hamster service won't start.

I have allowed Port 119 through the Windows Firewall.

Nothing shows in Hamster's log file when I try to connect over the LAN
which makes me think something else (?Windows XP) may be blocking the
connection. I run Apache on the server and I can connect to that over the
LAN.

Any suggestions for me please? I expect I have an incorrect setting
somewhere. The settings in XanaNews are identical - except one uses
127.0.0.1 as the news server and the other 192.168.1.4.

What about the bindings of the service?
I use Hamster Classic, so I can't tell you how to do that on Hamster PG.
However on my Hamster the default is to bind the services to 127.0.0.1,
but not the physical network interface.

Many thanks Wilfried and Tony :-)

Changing the binding to just 0.0.0.0 as Tony suggested has worked. I don't
know enough about networks to know why, unfortunately, but thanks for the
help!

Of course; 192.168.1.10 is the IP address of an *external* computer; you
must bind Hamster to the IP address of the interface of the computer Hamster
is running on (i.e. 192.168.1.4, if I did understand you correctly). At
Classic, Hamster does list the available IP addresses at the list box; IIRC
PG does, too.

But keep in mind, that 0.0.0.0 is a special IP address. It's usage means,
Hamster will accept any access by *every* IP. If someone happens to gain
access to your computer (maybe breaking through your firewall from outside,
maybe a virus landed locally), he no more needs to guess your mail server
IP. Then, your last and only protection against misuse is your password (if
you use one at all).
